In the dog days of summer a few years back, pitching for the Texas Rangers in a game that meant little at the time, Kenny Rogers was so wicked through six innings that he was flirting with a perfect game. The Cleveland Indians thought they knew why. They were collecting the evidence in the dugout: more than a dozen balls, all scuffed and cut in the same place, right on the major league logo.
